CANON EOS 5DS R REVIEW

The Canon Eos 5DS R and the companion EOS 5DS area unit the highest-megapixel cameras you'll be able to obtain (to date) before getting into medium-format territory. At $3,899 (body only), it’s clearly targeted to a small set of enthusiasts, artists, working photographers, and different Canon-owning professionals – the individuals UN agency use their photos in other things besides social media. While it isn’t a camera for everybody (not simply a worth barrier, but in functionally as well), the world’s number-one camera company deserves accolades for engineering this full-frame shooter. For the ideal customer, the 5DS R delivers outstanding photo quality.

FEATURES AND STYLE

On the outside, the Canon Eos 5DS R and EOS 5DS area unit identical, except the different logos on the front. Both area unit all-black interchangeable lens cameras with rough  finishes. There’s nothing startling or uncommon concerning them, but simply notice they area unit huge and hulking – measurement vi x four x three inches and consideration thirty two.8 ounces while not a lens.

The EOS 5DS R is the highest-megapixel camera you'll be able to obtain while not attending to medium-format.
The only technical distinction between the $3,699 5DS and 5DS R is there’s no optical low-pass (a.k.a., anti-aliasing) filter in the R model, which helps increase sharpness. Frankly, most people would wish to appear very exhausting to examine the distinction within the pictures they turn out. So, you could apply this review to the 5DS (and save $200 if you don’t would like the feature), a camera that delivered quality photos; we expected the same performance, if not better, from the 5DS R (click here to read our active review of the 5DS).
On the front is the Canon EF mount, and only EF-series lenses area unit suggested (versus the EF-S cropped lenses, which aren’t compatible). This isn’t an issue because the company offers an outsized selecton of glass, as well as third-party options too. (For our review we used AN f/1.8 50mm prime ANd an f/4 24-105mm IS USM customary zoom.) Also on the front area unit a remote sensing element, self-timer lamp, lens release, and depth-of-field preview buttons, as well as a little mono
microphone (optional stereo mic are often obstructed into the mic jack on the side).

You’ll find the hot shoe on the highest deck, with a locking mode dial and on/off switch on one aspect, and on the other aspect, buttons for White Balance/Metering, Drive/AF type, Exposure Compensation/ISO, and lamp (for illuminating the mono LCD that shows shooting parameters). Toward the top of the grip square measure a jog wheel, an AF-area selection/Multi-function key, and an angular  shutter button. Like other high-end Canon DSLRs, you won’t find a inbuilt flash.

The two dominant options on the rear square measure the big optical view finder with unit of measurement management and three.2-inch fixed-position LCD show (rated one.04 million dots). The viewfinder offers 100-percent coverage with .71x magnification, and it’s excellent. The LCD, on the other hand, is adequate but not world class; studio photographers would attach laptops or monitors as their read screens anyway.

There are a heap of buttons on the rear. To left of the LCD square measure Delete, Playback, Enlarge/Reduce, Rate, and Creative Photo/Two-Image show (the latter functions square measure intermeshed toward pros). Nearby square measure Menu and data buttons; Live read management for stills/video, as well as a middle start/stop for recording; and AF-ON, AE Lock, and AF point choice. Given the camera has a 61-point AF system (41 cross-type), you can opt for among any of them by victimization the joystick or jog wheel. We liked  that the joystick is raised and straightforward to manage. The nearby alphabetic character (Quick) key offers access to the obtainable parameters, plus there’s a massive management wheel with center Set button. Finally there’s a Multifunction Lock switch that prevents inadvertent camera changes.

On the right side may be a compartment for 2 cards, CompactFlash and SD. The CF slot accepts Type-1/UDMA-rated media, and all SD cards are often used together with SDXC. Although Canon doesn’t advocate the quickest cards obtainable, we recommend you get one to hurry the flow of fifty.6MP files. The camera also supports USB three.0 for quicker file transfers.
